Cigar cutters ensure a nice, smooth and clean cut around the edge of the cigar cap. But many cigar cutters are too small or end up breaking the cigar cap. And cigar stands are really handy when the ashtray is a bit further away, but they’re often a bit wobbly.

Developing the perfect blades took four years of continuous research and development by Dr Rod Kurthy to achieve his ambitious goals: cutting blades with razor-sharp edges, a wall thickness as thin as two sheets of photocopying paper, a cutting angle of just 18°, compared to the average of 40° for conventional cutting blades, and extreme metal hardness to maintain their exceptional sharpness even after decades of daily use. And, perhaps most importantly, there is no cutting edge at the outer rim of the blades – so there is no external force that could crack your cigar cap at the head of your cigar!

Blade material

440C stainless steel is regarded by many as the best metal for most types of blades. Hardness and corrosion resistance are the key factors in wear resistance, meaning the cutting edge remains impeccably sharp through many years of daily use.
There are over 150 different grades of stainless steel, and heat-treated 440C is the hardest of them all. But every advantage has its downside. When heat-treated to its maximum hardness, it is almost impossible to machine and sharpen fully hardened 440C stainless steel. This means higher costs for the metal and significantly higher manufacturing costs. But the cost and effort are definitely worth it!
These higher production costs are the reason why only a few manufacturers of cigar punches use 440C, and those who do often do not harden the 440C to the maximum Rockwell C hardness (HRC) of 60. The higher the heat treatment, the more difficult and expensive the manufacturing process becomes.
Not only do we use 440C stainless steel for the PerfecPunch & Stand Blades, but we have also heat-treated the steel to the maximum value of HRC 60, as confirmed by an independent metals testing laboratory in California.

Blades as thin as two sheets of paper

The thinner the blade, the more easily and effortlessly it glides into your cigar. This means the least possible damage to the cap at the head of your cigar.
PerfecPunch blades have a wall thickness of just 0.0075". That’s equivalent to the thickness of just two sheets of standard copy paper. Average punching blades are 3–4 times thicker. We even believe that PerfecPunch blades are the thinnest 440C punching blades in the world.

The grind

As with chef’s knives, typical die-cutting blades are ground with a bevel on each side of the blade. These bevels average 20°, meaning the total ground edge is 40°.
PerfecPunch knives are ground ONLY on the inner side of the blades. As with a razor-sharp sushi knife, this bevel is just 18°. There is no grinding on the outer side. The result is an exceptionally sharp blade with a 18° bevel instead of the standard 40° bevel.
