Pipe filter
Whether you smoke a pipe with or without a filter is something everyone has to decide for themselves. There is no right or wrong - like many things, it is ultimately a matter of taste. The fact is that a filter can absorb potentially harmful substances to a certain extent. In return, however, a filter also changes the flavour experience. There are three different types of filter: activated carbon, meerschaum and balsa wood. Each system has advantages and disadvantages, which we present below.
Activated carbon filter
- Material: Filled with activated carbon (carbon that has been made porous to bind pollutants).
- How it works: Activated carbon binds moisture, tar and pollutants from the smoke, making the smoke cooler and less harmful.
- Advantages: Effective filtering of harmful substances; ensures a mild and cool smoke.
- Disadvantages: Can slightly change the flavour of the tobacco; must be replaced after each use.
- Use: Particularly suitable for smokers who value the smoothest and cleanest smoke possible.
Sea foam filter
- Material: Meerschaum (a mineral material, also known as sepiolite).
- How it works: The porous meerschaum absorbs moisture and tar from the smoke without strongly distorting the flavours.
- Advantages: Good moisture absorption; preserves the natural flavour of the tobacco better than activated charcoal filters.
- Disadvantages: Less effective at filtering harmful substances compared to activated charcoal.
- Use: Ideal for smokers looking for a good balance between flavour retention and filter effect.
Balsa wood filter
- Material: Natural balsa wood, which is known for its exceptionally high absorbency.
- How it works: The wood absorbs moisture and tar without filtering the smoke or changing the flavour.
- Advantages: Hardly affects the flavour; environmentally friendly and biodegradable.
- Disadvantages: Filters pollutants less effectively than activated charcoal or meerschaum.
- Use: Particularly suitable for smokers who prefer a natural smoking experience without heavy filtering.
