DESCRIPTION
Alexandre Pliver, born in the port city of Saint-Malo, France, was the son of a blacksmith and a fisherwoman. From a young age, he was captivated by a longing for the sea. Whilst working as a ship’s boy on merchant ships, he heard tales of the legendary riches of the New World. But a severe storm caused his ship to be wrecked, and Pliver was the sole survivor to wash up on the coast of Tortuga – the notorious pirate island.
Rise to Pirate Captain
In Tortuga, Pliver quickly found his place amongst the outlaws. With a mixture of charm and cunning, he persuaded a crew to accept him as their captain. His first ship, the Écume Noire (“Black Foam”), was a captured merchant vessel, which he fitted out with heavy armament and a black flag bearing an emerald-green skull and crossbones. Pliver was known not only for his daring but also for his sharp mind. He planned his raids meticulously and preferred to strike at night. His fame spread rapidly when he began hunting Spanish treasure fleets laden with gold and precious stones. He became particularly notorious for his raid on the so-called Emerald Fleet, a Spanish convoy carrying a particularly valuable cargo.
The Curse of the Emerald Fleet
Pliver and his crew captured the ships of the Emerald Fleet off the coast of Venezuela and, alongside gold and silver, discovered a chest full of bright green emeralds. But the booty came with a curse: a captured Spanish priest warned Pliver that the gemstones were protected by an Aztec deity. The crew laughed it off – until mysterious accidents began to plague the ship. Men vanished, the sails tore for no apparent reason, and Pliver himself suffered from terrible nightmares.
The pirate’s end
Driven by paranoia and greed, Pliver sought a way to break the curse, but the emeralds were too valuable to give up. Eventually, the Écume Noire was intercepted by the British Navy off the coast of Jamaica. In a final battle, Pliver was seriously wounded, but instead of surrendering, he jumped overboard with the chest of cursed emeralds and sank into the depths of the sea.
