DESCRIPTION
Julius Newman was born in 1875 in a small Hungarian village and crossed the Atlantic with his family in 1888 in search of the American dream. As he did not have a middle name, he had to choose one before the officials could complete his entry papers. At a loss, he asked the immigration officer for help, who suggested the name Caesar, after the great Roman. Julius was delighted at the idea of being named after a historic leader and conqueror, but due to a typing error by the officer, Caesar was spelled with an ‘e’. And so Julius Caeser (J.C.) Newman, an American citizen, was born.
Owned by the family since 1895
Unlike his brothers, who became tailors, J.C. had a passion for making cigars. So his mother paid an experienced cigar maker $3.00 a month to teach her young son the art of cigar rolling. On that day in May 1895, when he founded his business and hand-rolled his first 500 cigars for the family grocer, J.C. did not yet realise that he was establishing a family legacy that would still be thriving four generations later. In fact, of the 42,000 cigar manufacturers licensed in 1895, the J.C. Newman Cigar Company is the only producer of premium cigars that is still owned and operated by the founding family.
Julius Caesar on his 135th birthday
Diamond Crown was one of J.C. Newman’s earliest cigar brands. Eric and Bobby’s father, Stanford J. Newman, launched Diamond Crown in 1995 to mark the 100th anniversary of the J.C. Newman Cigar Company. The fuller-bodied Diamond Crown MAXIMUS followed in 2002.
In 2010, to celebrate J.C.’s 135th birthday and the company’s 115th anniversary, the Diamond Crown Julius Caesar was released. Diamond Crown Julius Caesar cigars are carefully hand-rolled in small batches by Tabacalera A. Fuente in the Dominican Republic. As with all Diamond Crown cigars, the Julius Caesar range is produced to the highest quality standards.
A distinctive flavour
You will find that it is the particularly flavourful wrapper made from Ecuadorian Havana seed, combined with a smooth, robust blend of fine Dominican binder leaf and selected Dominican and Central American filler tobaccos – all carefully aged for five years – that give the Julius Caesar its bold, rich and distinctive flavour.
