
The brand was founded as early as 1875 by Alvàrey y Garcìa and taken over in 1903 by Rodrìguez Fernandez, who made the brand world-famous through targeted and skilful marketing campaigns. For example, he managed to win over the then British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, to the brand and renamed the former Julieta No. 2 format ‘Romeo y Julieta Churchill’, which still bears the golden band bearing his name today. The name of the factory is, of course, inspired by the tragic heroes of William Shakespeare’s play of the same name.
