San Cristóbal de La Habana was the original name of Havana, the capital of Cuba, when it was founded in 1519. The name, chosen in honour of San Cristóbal – known in German as Saint Christopher – stems from the fact that the city’s foundation coincided with San Cristóbal’s name day.
Incidentally, ‘La Habana’ is a Native American term meaning ‘place’. The San Cristóbal de La Habana brand was launched in 1999, shortly before the start of the new millennium, in honour of the city’s long history.
