DESCRIPTION
The production processes for beer and whisky are very similar at the outset. The raw materials used are dried and crushed barley malt, fresh spring water from the local area, and yeast. After fermentation, a brew with a relatively low alcohol content is produced, which is known amongst whisky connoisseurs as ‘beer’ or ‘wash’. However, a whisky is far from ready at this stage – it must undergo double or triple distillation, followed by years or even decades of maturation in suitable casks. So when William Delmé-Evans converted a centuries-old brewery into a whisky distillery in 1947, all he had to do was install a few copper stills and build a large storage hall – and Tullibardine was born. Incidentally, the first mention of the brewery dates back to 1488, when none other than James IV of Scotland dropped by to enjoy a drink shortly before his coronation. Inspired by this story, the operators of the Tullibardine Distillery chose that year and a crown as their logo. The Tullibardine 228 Burgundy Finish owes its ruby-red colour to the 228-litre barriques, which had previously been filled with French Pinot Noir. The aromas are mainly the result of ageing in bourbon casks. These were carefully selected by the whisky experts at Tullibardine and shipped across the Atlantic for ‘recycling’. It’s hard to believe that the nuances of red fruit and chocolate that unfold on the palate actually come from the old wood.
