Bunnahabhain Whisky 12-year-old 70cl

Imagine an island where the air is as pure as on a mountain summit; an island with sparkling, crystal-clear waters, where Mother Nature herself seems almost at home... Before long, your imagination will take you to a beautiful place called Islay, an island with seven distilleries, none of which is quite like the others. The Bunnahabhain 12-Year-Old Single Malt (pronounced ‘Bu-na-ha-venn’) comes from one of these enchanting distilleries, where one of the island’s most inviting whiskies is produced, affectionately known as ‘the gentle giant of Islay’. This name is partly due to the size of the distillery itself (hence ‘giant’), and partly to the soft Islay smoky notes that lie at the heart of the whisky (hence ‘gentle’).


Distillery The Bunnahabhain Distillery is peacefully situated on the sheltered north-east coast of Islay, offering a magnificent view of the Paps of Jura (a range of hills on a neighbouring island). This tranquil, secluded and unassuming area offers its visitors peace and solitude – an idyllic setting for distilling Scotch whisky. The distillery was established in 1881, in the late 19th century, at the mouth of the River Margadale, from which its name is derived (Bunnahabhain means ‘mouth of the river’ in Gaelic). The water for this fine single malt comes from the Margadale spring, which rises just one mile north of Bunnahabhain in the lush green valley. Although distillation began around this time, the Bunnahabhain 12-year-old single malt was not created until almost 100 years later (the first bottles for retail were not bottled until the late 1970s).

The flavour o
The flavour profile of our gentle giant is entirely unique and differs from traditional, heavily peated Islay single malts – this is largely due to the very sparing use of malted and peated barley, and partly to the fresh spring water from Margadale, which flows underground through the peaty moorlands on its way to the distillery. When you pour yourself a dram, you’ll notice the fresh aromas wafting through the air, followed by a hint of smoke, as if it had been trapped like a genie in a bottle. The captivating flavour is initially slightly fruity and nutty, and as you savour it more deeply, its malty sweetness reveals itself. With the same patience as our gentle giant, we wait with anticipation for the flavour to develop into a wonderfully rich, full-bodied and lingering finish.

Tasting Notes:
Colour: Golden.
Aroma: Fresh, aromatic, sea air and sweetness, a hint of smoke.
Taste: Clean, slightly fruity, nutty, with a spectacular sweetness combined with malt. Elegant, hardly any smoke, definitely no peat.
