DESCRIPTION
Production and maturation of the multi-award-winning Bourbon 101 Proof
The multi-award-winning 101 Proof Bourbon is produced in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, using a continuous distillation process. The fermentation process begins with a unique yeast strain, which converts the mash – consisting of maize, rye and barley – into alcohol. Like all Wild Turkey products, the bourbon is then aged for at least five years in heavily charred oak casks. From the second year onwards, the ageing process is regularly monitored and assessed. The bourbon is ready for bottling when its aroma reveals a blend of vanilla, oak, citrus and toffee, and its flavour is characterised by notes of vanilla, caramel, toffee and a hint of smoke.
Enjoyment and serving suggestions
Due to its higher alcohol content, it is recommended to enjoy the 101 Proof bourbon with a few drops of water or on the rocks. It is also ideal for classic cocktails such as the Boulevardier, Kentucky Mule, Whiskey Sour, Old Fashioned, Mint Julep, Hot Toddy and Bourbon Bramble.
The history of the Wild Turkey distillery
The Wild Turkey distillery as we know it today was founded in 1869. In 1980, it was taken over by Austin Nicols, which has been part of the Campari Group since 2009. The name ‘Wild Turkey’ originated in 1940, when the then distillery manager, Thomas McCarthy, took a bottle of his whisky with him on a turkey hunt. His friends were so impressed that they asked for more of the ‘wild turkey whisky’.
The Masters of Distillation: Jimmy and Eddie Russell
In 1954, Jimmy Russell joined the distillery team as Master Distiller. Over the course of his career, he was inducted into the Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame and recently celebrated his 60th anniversary with the company. Since 1981, he has been actively supported by his son Eddie, who has also become a legend in the world of bourbon.
