DESCRIPTION
Even the name ‘Rampur’ somehow brings to mind associations with India. And indeed, this particular bottle is a rather rare Indian single malt whisky. It is distilled according to the ‘from barley to bottle’ principle at a distillery opened in 1943 at the foot of the Himalayas, and then left to mature in casks. Due to the marked seasonal climatic fluctuations and the generally warmer temperatures, the maturation process is faster and more intense than in the countries of Northern Europe. The town of Rampur is home to this special whisky and is situated in the shadow of the thousand-metre-high, snow-capped mountains in the state of Uttar Pradesh. Whilst the distillery cannot boast centuries-old distilling traditions or rustic warehouses, it does have forward-thinking management and state-of-the-art facilities, where even the barley is malted on-site. Its provenance alone is almost worth a taster’s sip.
Anyone tasting the Rampur Single Malt Whisky will sense notes of malt, vanilla, apricots, apples and sweet wine dancing across the palate. The aroma of dried fruit also suggests that this whisky has spent at least part of its maturation in sherry casks.
