José L. Piedra is a particularly remarkable Habano, as not only do the filler leaves come from the Remedios tobacco-growing region, but the cigars are also ‘totalmente a mano, tripa corta’ – short-fillers made entirely by hand.
The Piedra family moved to Cuba from the Spanish province of Asturias in the 1880s. They settled near the town of Santa Clara, which lies at the heart of the Remedios region, where tobacco has been grown since the 16th century. It was there that they began producing cigars.
José Lamadrid Piedra, known by his full name, led the second generation, founding and developing the brand as we know it today.
All seven José L. Piedra sizes are produced using the traditional ‘totalmente a mano, tripa corta’ method – they are short-fillers made entirely by hand.
