As with other major Habanos brands, such as Montecristo and Romeo y Julieta, the name Sancho Panza is taken from a masterpiece of world literature. Sancho Panza is the faithful squire of the knight-errant Don Quixote in the novel of the same name by Miguel de Cervantes, who is revered in Spain as the national poet. The first part was published in 1605 and is still regarded today as one of the finest works of world literature. The name Sancho Panza was first used to designate a Habano in 1848, and the brand has enjoyed an excellent reputation amongst experienced aficionados ever since. The brand was founded by a German named Emil Ohmstedt, who is also said to have been instrumental in the creation of the El Rey del Mundo brand. In the 1950s, Sancho Panza was one of the most popular Habanos brands in Spain. To this day, the cigars are said to have excellent ageing potential.
Today, the range comprises just two cigars. With their medium-strength blend of filler and binder leaves from the Vuelta Abajo tobacco-growing region, all sizes are ‘totalmente a mano, tripa larga’ – long-fillers made entirely by hand.
A particular treat is the limited-edition Sancho Panza Valientes Exclusivo Suiza, which was produced exclusively for Switzerland.
