DESCRIPTION
The label on Malfy Gin is as turquoise-blue as the Italian mountain lakes (or the shallow Mediterranean coast) and as bright orange as Sicilian blood oranges. You’ll also come across the letters G.Q.D.I. three times, which stands for ‘Quality Gin from Italy’. The term appears to be a marketing strategy devised by the producers, as no one other than Malfy Gin uses the abbreviation. The idea for the gin came about when distillery owner Carlo Vergnano and distiller Beppe Ronco climbed the nearby Mount Monviso and found not only the purest spring water there, but also wild juniper bushes. Together with the wide variety of citrus fruits native to Italy, the men had all the key ingredients for a gin right on their doorstep. Initially, the Vergnano family – who have been running a distillery in Moncalieri, near Turin, built in 1906, since 1992 – produced Malfy Gin in small batches. However, when Elwyn Gladstone, founder of Biggar & Leith, became aware of it, he proposed a collaboration – the aim was to reach a wider, more global audience. Production remains in the hands of Carlo, his wife and their children, as well as Beppe Ronco and Denis Muni. The “Con Arancia” gin variety makes greater use of Sicilian blood oranges, which are harvested in November. The peel of these prized citrus fruits is soaked in alcohol; the juice resulting from pressing is then blended with juniper and six other botanicals to undergo the distillation process together. The flavour is characterised by a refreshing citrus note.
