Davidoff’s brand history is rich in extraordinary innovations and iconic achievements in the world of cigars. These innovations, including the famous Aniversario No. 1, were groundbreaking in their day and caused a sensation with their craftsmanship and uniqueness.

Davidoff concludes the successful series ‘Cigar History Revisited’ with a grand finale that will also go down in the brand’s history : unlike the previous three releases, the Grand Cru Diademas Finas Limited Edition Collection delights with a new, special format and a unique blend. The Diademas Finas, which has never before featured in the Grand Cru range, has an even stronger connection to the world of wine. For the first time, Davidoff has combined the notes of a Rive-Droite Bordeaux – namely citrus, dark cherries and walnut – in a single cigar. This was achieved through the three main tobaccos in the filler – just as a Bordeaux is blended from at least three different main grape varieties. Furthermore, Davidoff had one of the filler tobaccos aged in a Premier Grand Cru Classé red wine cask from Bordeaux – a world first. The Dominican San Vicente Seco features a finer leaf that better absorbs the aromas from the red wine cask , thereby helping the cigar to perfectly reflect the wine’s fruity character .

The Figurado highlights the remarkable craftsmanship of the rollers and allows aficionados to gradually discover this perfect blend.

The story

In 1946, Zino Davidoff created a line of cigars that was to be produced in the same way as classic Bordeaux wines. The blend was to be based on the soil and climate in which the tobacco grew – just as with the French ‘terroirs’. And just as three different main grape varieties are blended in Bordeaux wines, these cigars contained three different filler tobaccos. Davidoff’s Grand Cru cigars were born. Just as with the rich and ripe grapes of Bordeaux, the fruits of yet another innovation were now harvested and transformed into a truly remarkable cigar – one that deserves the title of Grand Cru even more. For the Davidoff Grand Cru Diademas Finas Limited Edition Collection contains tobacco that has been aged in Premier Grand Cru Classé red wine barrels . In keeping with Zino Davidoff’s groundbreaking and innovative blends, this is the first time that tobacco refined in Bordeaux red wine casks has been used. The special Dominican San Vicente Seco is allowed to mature to perfection over a full six months. The result is the same notes that characterise Bordeaux wines : dark cherries, walnuts and citrus fruits. The combination caresses the palate just as the wine does when swirled in the glass. The distinctive Figurado format lends this limited edition an extra special touch, as it draws the palate’s attention to the diversity of the blend. The perfect accompaniment to a bottle of wine from France’s most famous wine region. Santé.

Barrel ageing

The cask: The tobacco leaves are pressed firmly into a Premier Grand Cru Classé red wine cask . As the temperature inside the sealed cask rises, the fermentation process begins. The rise in temperature is regularly monitored to ensure the tobacco does not overheat.

The maturation: The Dominican San Vicente Seco filler tobacco is allowed to mature in the cask for a total of six months. During this time, it is turned every two weeks in a time-consuming process. During this time, the tobacco absorbs the wine aromas from the wooden cask. This is a natural process in which no wine is applied directly to the tobacco leaves.

The result: is that barrel ageing lends the flavours complexity and depth. In particular, the use of Dominican San Vicente Seco tobacco noticeably refines the flavour. Seco leaves are finer and can therefore absorb more of the wine’s aroma.

Pairing for wine connoisseurs

The Grand Cru Diademas Finas, with their characteristic aromas of citrus, cherry and walnut, were created with an even closer nod to the world of wine. As one of the blended tobaccos was allowed to mature in a red wine cask, the cigar pairs superbly with a red wine from Bordeaux, particularly from the Rive Droite. The wines from Saint-Émilion are renowned for their fruity character and are therefore the ideal accompaniment to the Grand Cru Diademas Finas Limited Edition Collection.
