A.J. Fernandez
DESCRIPTION
The A.J. Fernandez Amar Toro combines the classic Toro format with an all-Nicaraguan blend and an exceptionally personal story. A.J. Fernandez launched the Amar series in 2026, following a fire the previous year that had severely damaged his production facility in Estelí. The cigar was developed as a token of gratitude to all those who had supported the company during this difficult period. The name also reflects this sentiment. ‘Amar’ means ‘to love’ in Spanish and is also linked to the lunar symbolism of A.J. Fernandez’s Lebanese family history. The result is a medium- to full-bodied premium cigar with a balanced sweetness, spice and classic Nicaraguan roasted flavours.
A.J. Fernandez Amar Toro, ring gauge 56
The Toro measures 6 inches, or around 152 mm, and has a ring gauge of 56, with a diameter of approximately 22.2 mm. The slightly larger Toro format ensures a full-bodied smoke and gives the blend enough space to develop slowly. The cigar is made entirely from Nicaraguan tobaccos. A Nicaraguan Habano wrapper envelops a Nicaraguan binder and filler. It is manufactured at the San Lotano factory in Ocotal. With its length and robust ring gauge, the Toro sits between the concentrated Robusto and the more voluminous Gordo.
Wood, coffee and cocoa take centre stage
In terms of flavour, the Toro opens with wood, pepper and roasted notes. As the cigar is smoked, coffee, earth and subtle cocoa notes emerge. Tasters also note cedar, oak, leather, cinnamon, roasted almonds and a subtle sweet component. The cigar comes across as creamy and aromatic, without losing its spicy Nicaraguan character. Particularly interesting is the interplay between dry woody and peppery notes and softer coffee and nutty notes.
A versatile Toro for extended moments of enjoyment
With a ring gauge of 56, the Toro offers plenty of smoke and a comparatively cool smoking experience. Specialist retailers estimate a smoking time of around 60 to 90 minutes, although the actual duration depends heavily on the individual’s smoking pace. The Amar Toro is particularly recommended for aficionados who prefer a medium-bodied to full-bodied profile with roasted notes, wood, spices and a subtle sweetness. At the same time, it offers a good introduction to the Amar series, as its length and ring gauge strike a balanced middle ground between concentration and volume.
