Whisky has been produced in Tennessee for centuries, but due to the limited number of licences, most producers operated illegally – these spirits are known as moonshine. However, when the recession hit the US in 2008, various states sought a way to boost employment and maintain tax revenue. One option for achieving both was to relax the laws governing distilleries. Since 2010, the Ole Smoky Distillery – also known as ‘The Holler’ – at the foot of the Smoky Mountains has attracted many visitors and has been the most visited distillery in the US since its foundation. The company now produces 15 different varieties of Ole Smoky Tennessee Moonshine at its two branches, with the help of Master Distiller Dave Pickerell. These are distilled according to a 100-year-old family recipe using local ingredients and sold in traditional preserving jars. Ole Smoky Moonshine Hunch Punch Lightnin is a moonshine flavoured with pineapple, oranges and cherries, which can be served not only neat but also works well in fruity mixed drinks.
