Santa Damiana epitomises the cosmopolitan among cigars and represents the Dominican attitude to life in humidors worldwide. For more than two decades, this brand has been one of the best-known and most popular hand-rolled cigars from the Dominican Republic. The famous "Tabacalera de Garcia" manufactory produces three series of the brand. The tobacco for the first-class Santa Damiana is carefully sorted by hand and matures for at least two years before being processed. This allows the aficionado to enjoy the cigar immediately without having to store it for a long time like many others.
Although the Santa Damiana cigar brand has been around for over 20 years, it can actually be considered relatively new, as it was only launched in 1992. It was given a somewhat stronger and full-bodied blend especially for the European market. The filler consists of a combination of Dominican and Mexican tobaccos, while the binder comes from Mexico. The wrapper, on the other hand, is a high-quality US Connecticut ShadeTop rating
Santa Damiana is an extremely popular Dominican series that offers first-class quality throughout. It promises an uncomplicated and harmonious smoking experience with a flavour that can be described as light yet highly aromatic. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend it
So far, unfortunately, one of the less recommendable cigars I’ve had.
Negatives: Very veiny wrapper, quite loosely rolled overall. Very airy on the cold draw (around 80%), which continued throughout.
It burned very unevenly at first, but this corrected itself after about 10 minutes. However, the problem recurred repeatedly thereafter. Quite a sharp taste even in the first third, which persisted right until it went out. I had to relight it regularly from the second third onwards.
Positives: Quite good smoke production, with a nice creamy flavour at the start. The band came off easily.
Also high in nicotine; not necessarily recommended for beginners. You’d certainly expect something different in this price range. Or perhaps I was just unlucky enough to get a ‘Monday cigar’.
