About Prince Hall
Prince Hall was one of the most influential free Black leaders during the founding of the United States in the 18th century; as a leading abolitionist, he fought against slavery and championed equal educational rights. He is also known as the father of Black Freemasonry, which is still known today as Prince Hall Masonry. In the late 1700s, he made numerous contributions to the Black community, which he achieved as a free man and citizen of the United States. He was also a businessman and is believed to have served in the Continental Army during the War of Independence.
Prince Hall took an interest in the Masonic brotherhood because Freemasonry was founded on the ideals of liberty, equality and peace. His love for these ideals drove him to become one of the first Black members of Freemasonry in the United States. However, it was not until 1787 that they were recognised as a ‘full’ Masonic lodge, when Prince Hall received a charter from the Grand Lodge of England, the mother of all Freemasonry. In 1787, African Lodge No. 459 became African Lodge No. 1, with Prince Hall as its Worshipful Master.

Blumig mild
