Grand Mezcal La Escondida Tequila 70cl

Mezcal is increasingly emerging from the shadow of the dominant agave spirit, tequila, which is in fact a sub-type of mezcal. To emphasise this once again: tequila is produced exclusively from the blue agave, whilst mezcal can, in principle, be made from any variety of agave (currently, around 50 different varieties are used). Tequila may only be produced in certain authorised regions within five Mexican states (the majority comes from Jalisco), whilst most mezcals come from the state of Oaxaca, though they may also be produced in other regions.
The name of this mezcal, La Escondida (‘the hidden woman’), derives from a legend dating back to 1543. At that time, the Spanish took a local princess captive. According to the stories, she managed to escape but was never found again. Nevertheless, local fishermen claim to have seen the princess as a mermaid in the Pacific Ocean. This Grand Mezcal is made from 100% Espadín agave, which is native to Oaxaca. This multi-faceted spirit is earthy and smoky on the nose, smooth and well-balanced on the palate, and pleasantly robust on the finish.
