El Dorado Rum 12 Years 70cl

The South American country of Guyana has a long tradition of rum production and was once home to around 300 distilleries. Rum used to play a particularly important role in shipping, as it was served to seafarers to keep them in good spirits. From 31 July 1970, however, drinking on board British ships was banned, causing many small distilleries in Guyana to go bankrupt. Eventually, the last remaining viable businesses merged to form Demerara Distillers. Although the stills used are quite old, they enable the distillery to produce a wide variety of different rum styles. These include El Dorado Rum 12 Years: for this rum, several individual distillates were blended together, having previously been aged for several years in ex-bourbon casks. The ‘12 Years’ designation refers to the youngest distillate in the blend.
