Bohemian No. 10 The Martinez 25.5% 700ml

The ‘Father of the Martini’ is thought to have been created in the late 19th century and represents a blend of classic sweet drinks such as the Manhattan and drier ones such as the Martini. Although there are no precise details regarding its origins, self-confessed Martinez enthusiasts attribute the creation to the bartender Julio Richelieu.

We concur and thank Julio for serving a miner, on his way to Martinez in California around 1874, a cocktail made from Old Tom gin, Italian vermouth, Maraschino cherry liqueur and bitters. From the 1890s onwards, dry drinks became the preferred choice. Consequently, the sweetened Old Tom Gin commonly used at the time was replaced by London Dry Gin. To this day, the MARTINEZ is enjoyed in this way: served in a chilled cocktail glass and garnished with a twist of orange zest.

Tasting Notes

Colour: Radiant rust-brown.
Aroma: A fusion of cherry and cola, with a subtle hint of sloe, juniper and spices, notes of potpourri, burnt brown sugar and hints of geranium and pepper.
Taste: Silky smooth, sweet and subtly tart, a seductive blend of nutmeg and cloves with a core of juniper; becomes spicy and slightly fruity-tart over time, with delicate notes of kumquats and mandarins.
Finish: Along , citrus-dominated finish, with hints of rhubarb and various spices.
Overall: A wonderfully rich and sophisticated cocktail.

Method

Pour into a mixing glass filled with ice cubes, stir well and strain into a cocktail glass. Add a garnish to the drink. To finish, lightly mist the cocktail with the aroma sprayer.
