DESCRIPTION
The Meerapfel Behind the Scenes No. 5 is the Robusto Gordo of the range: box-pressed in a 5 x 60 format, compact in length and generous in ring gauge. It offers a cool, creamy smoke lasting a good hour, with a consistently harmonious profile from the first to the last third.
Over 400 years of tobacco history
The Meerapfel family is one of the oldest tobacco families in the world. According to tradition, their ancestors were already trading tobacco between the New and Old Worlds as far back as the 16th century. In 1876, the family opened its first cigar factory in Baden – a date that still appears on Meerapfel banders to this day. For generations, the family operated primarily behind the scenes, as traders and suppliers of high-quality tobaccos to other brands. With ‘Behind the Scenes’, they pay tribute to this quiet yet influential role.
Blend and Format
Jeremiah Meerapfel created the blend for his sister Melissa, who today represents the eleventh generation of the family. The light Connecticut Shade wrapper in Claro has a very fine vein pattern, is slightly oily and has a velvety-soft surface. The filler comes from the Dominican Republic, where the cigar is hand-rolled and pressed into a rectangular shape. The ring gauge of 60 ensures a particularly cool, full-bodied smoke and allows the creamy side of the blend to come through beautifully.
Flavour and character
When cold, notes of cedar, leather, earth and a floral hint emerge. Once lit, the No. 5 combines cedar and cream with roasted nuts and toast. These are complemented by a touch of earth, a subtle hint of coffee and a hint of pepper. The manufacturer describes the profile as milk chocolate, gentle pepper and light cedar. The smoke profile remains remarkably consistent: the No. 5 stays mild, balanced and rounded from the first to the last third. The aftertaste lingers with notes of cream and wood, whilst the ash is grey and firm.
Who is the No. 5 suitable for?
No. 5 is ideal for connoisseurs who like thick cigars but are looking for a mild cigar with a manageable smoking time. It pairs superbly with an afternoon coffee, a glass of white wine or a light rum. For beginners wishing to try a large ring gauge, it is an excellent choice. Like all formats in the range, it comes in a coloured box of 25, colour-coordinated with the band.
