Fribourg & Treyer Wingate Mixture – 50g tin

Fribourg & Treyer Wingate Mixture – 50g tin is a classic English blend with just the right amount of character: authentic, spicy and smoky, yet surprisingly well-balanced and a pleasure to smoke. The blend is aimed at connoisseurs who enjoy Latakia – not as a ‘smoke bomb’, but elegantly integrated and softened by a delicate Virginia sweetness. A hint of Perique adds further depth and a piquant, slightly fruity spice. In practice, this results in a well-rounded, cool smoke that’s particularly suited to quiet evenings or as a stylish after-dinner treat. The 50g tin is ideal if you want to keep the blend fresh and enjoy it over several sessions.

An English-style treat with Latakia & Perique – balanced rather than overpowering

Wingate Mixture is often described as a ‘sweet Latakia blend’: Latakia brings the gently smoky, woody-spicy note, whilst Virginia lightens the blend and lends it a natural sweetness. The Perique content is deliberately measured – more of an accent than a star of the show – and contributes typical hints of pepper and dark fruit (e.g. raisin/plum). Overall, the tobacco falls into the mid-range: aromatic but not overpowering. Many descriptions also highlight its pleasant smoking characteristics: cool, satisfying and often surprisingly ‘bite-free’ when smoked at a leisurely pace.

Handling; smoke profile: straightforward ribbon cut

The cut is a classic ribbon cut, which is easy to pack and lights reliably. A brief moment in the open air can – as with many tinned tobaccos – make lighting easier and allow the flavours to come through more clearly. In terms of flavour, Wingate Mixture is a very typical ‘gentleman’s’ English blend: tobly, smoky, spicy, with a subtle sweet undertone. The room note is accordingly: distinctly English, i.e. rather smoky and tobly, yet still classified by many as pleasant. Those who love English mixtures will find this a very classic, reliable example with a subtle extra kick.
