Secret Treasures

DESCRIPTION

To get straight to the point, this cigar is a treasure from the Kelner Boutique Factory’s treasure trove. The Secret Treasures Dominican Blackbeard was blended by Hendrik Kelner Jr. A cigar as exquisite and coveted as the treasure of the pirate Blackbeard....

Blackbeard, whose real name was Edward Teach or Thatch (sometimes also known as Edward Drummond), is regarded as one of the most notorious pirates of the so-called ‘Golden Age of Piracy’. This era spanned roughly from 1650 to 1730, with Blackbeard being active mainly in the early 1700s. He became known above all for his fearsome appearance, his ruthless tactics and his impressive leadership.

Early life

Little is known about Blackbeard’s early life. It is believed that he was born in England around 1680. It is thought that he initially served as a privateer during the War of the Spanish Succession (1701–1714) before becoming a pirate. Around 1716, he joined the crew of the pirate captain Benjamin Hornigold, who was terrorising the waters of the Caribbean and the Atlantic at the time.

Career as a pirate

Blackbeard quickly became known for his brutal and strategic raids. He soon rose to become a captain in his own right and, in 1717, captured a French merchant ship, which he renamed Queen Anne’s Revenge. The ship was armed with 40 cannons and was considered one of the most powerful in pirate hands. Blackbeard used psychological warfare to intimidate his opponents. He was notorious for wearing long, black beards, to which he would sometimes attach burning fuses during battles. This made him appear like a demonic devil and often caused his opponents to surrender without a fight.

Blockade of Charleston

One of his most famous manoeuvres was the blockade of the port city of Charleston in South Carolina in May 1718. With a small fleet, he captured several ships and took prominent citizens prisoner. He demanded a ransom in the form of medicines, which were eventually delivered to him, whereupon he released the prisoners.

Blackbeard’s End

In the same year, Blackbeard accepted a royal offer of amnesty and settled in Bath Town, North Carolina. However, his return to an ‘honourable’ life was short-lived. He soon reverted to piracy, prompting the British Governor of Virginia, Alexander Spotswood, to hunt him down. On 22 November 1718, Blackbeard was confronted by a group of soldiers led by Lieutenant Robert Maynard during a fierce battle off the coast of Ocracoke Island. After an intense hand-to-hand struggle, in which Blackbeard sustained several gunshot and stab wounds, he was killed. His head was hung from the bowsprit of Maynard’s ship as a warning to other pirates.

Legend and Myth

Blackbeard achieved an almost legendary fame both during his lifetime and beyond. He was often portrayed as a cruel, ruthless pirate, although there are also reports that he rarely resorted to unnecessary violence if he could secure his booty without bloodshed. His mythological reputation has inspired generations of seafaring tales, books, films and television series, ensuring that he remains one of the most iconic pirates in history to this day. Legend also has it that Blackbeard hid great treasures before his death, which remain undiscovered to this day.

Secret Treasures Blackbeard

The Secret Treasures Blackbeard is just as exciting as the life of the pirate Blackbeard himself. It makes a bold statement and delights the palate with notes of earth, spices, coffee and pepper. This full-bodied cigar is crafted by none other than Hendrik Kelner Jr. of the Kelner Boutique Factory (KBF), one of the leading figures in the cigar industry.

Secret Treasures – rediscovered treasures

In German, ‘Secret Treasures’ means ‘hidden treasures’. Cigars under the ‘Secret Treasures’ label have usually spent many years in a cigar factory’s ageing humidor. Under the Secret Treasures label, they finally find their way out of the ageing humidors after years of ageing and offer a premium smoking experience. Batches are strictly limited, ranging from 500 to 5,000 cigars per batch. Each blend is unique, and once a line has sold out, it cannot be reordered.
