DESCRIPTION
Charatan Pipe Tobacco 1992 Mixture 50g Tin is a modern English-style classic – smoky, spicy and yet pleasantly well-rounded. The blend is named after the year Tor Imports was founded and is regarded in many shops as a direct alternative to the former Dunhill My Mixture 965. That is precisely where its appeal lies: a ‘sweetened English’ blend in which Latakia does not dominate everything, but is elegantly balanced by Oriental tobacco and a mellow Cavendish component. The result is a fragrant, aromatically rich smoke that really comes into its own in the evening – after a meal or with a dram of whisky. In the 50g tin, you get a blend that’s easy to pack and burns very evenly when smoked at a leisurely pace.
Nutty Latakia depth meets Macedonian Oriental
Charatan 1992 Mixture features a selection of small Latakia leaves, which give the tobacco its characteristic, nutty-smoky depth. This is complemented by light Oriental from Macedonia, which adds ‘roundness’: spicy, slightly dry, with an elegant, delicately herbaceous note that keeps the blend lively. A third component is brown Cavendish – rich in natural oils and aroma – which lends the smoke a noticeable smoothness. This makes the blend seem softer and slightly sweeter than many classic English mixtures, without veering towards dessert-like flavours. Some retailers also describe the blend as an English mixture containing Orientals, Virginia, Latakia and Cavendish; in practice, this fits the flavour profile very well: a smoky, spicy core with a warm, slightly caramel-like, nutty sweetness in the background.
When smoked, 1992 comes across as pleasantly ‘substantial’: it starts off spicy and smoky, then becomes rounder and creamier, and remains aromatically consistent right to the end. The room aroma is typically English – smoky and toby – but is often perceived as particularly pleasant and ‘fragrant’ thanks to the roundness provided by the Cavendish. Smoking it slowly yields the coolest, silkiest smoke. A great blend for anyone who loves classic English blends but is looking for a little more balance and elegance in their everyday smoking.
