Dr Jacques Perl, a chemist from Berlin, researched and revolutionised the filtration of tobacco smoke with the company VAUEN, whilst also lending his name to a brand that was soon, quite literally, ‘on everyone’s lips’. In 1921, Dr Perl was registered as a trade mark with the German Reich Patent Office. It all began with a plain paper filter, which, thanks to its multi-layered filter paper, promised high absorbency and the minimisation of harmful substances. There were three different sizes, including 9mm and 6mm filters. VAUEN was thus one of the first manufacturers to fit pipes with a stem bore designed for filters.
