DESCRIPTION
There are many distilleries that claim to be ‘Scotland’s most beautifully situated distillery’. Speyburn is fully justified in doing so. This small distillery – situated in the Speyside region – is built in the Victorian style, lies in a deep, hilly valley and offers a spectacular view on the road from Rothes to Elgin. The distillery was built in 1897 – the year Queen Victoria celebrated her Jubilee – which is why the architect, Charles Chree Doig, was required to complete it before the end of the year. He managed it just in the nick of time, and only thanks to the willingness of the staff, who, wrapped up warm, began production in the building which still had no windows or doors. Despite its beautiful location and traditional appearance, the distillery – which draws its water from the Granty Burn – is known to very few. The distillery caused a stir when it was sold by United Distillers to Inver House in 1996, and Inver House launched a 21-year-old “Centenary Celebration 1897–1997” to mark its 100th anniversary.
