Around 2000 years ago, sugar cane travelled from China to India, from where it was brought to the Canary Islands by traders via North Africa over the next 1000 years. In the early 16th century, the Spanish and Portuguese conquerors then began to cultivate the sugar cane plant in Brazil and the Caribbean. It is no longer possible to determine when and where rum was first produced. The only certainty is that the first governor of Puerto Rico, Ponce de Léon, founded a distillery in 1508, immediately after his arrival. The word "rum" first appeared in a decree issued by the governor of Jamaica on 3 July 1661. It comes from the word "rumbellium", a common expression from the colloquial language of Devonshire (Great Britain) and means unrest, turmoil, as an allusion to the intoxicating effect of this drink. England and France, however, banned the export of rum from the colonies to protect their domestic products. They sold the rum at rock-bottom prices to the navy stationed in the colonies. As a result, rum from the Caribbean (West Indies) quickly gained popularity and in 1687 the Royal English Navy passed a law that every sailor was entitled to a pint (approx. 0.5 litre) of rum as a daily ration. And so began the long-lasting tradition between Caribbean rum and seafaring. Thanks to this tradition, rum reached all five continents and established itself as the most produced spirit in the world. Today, rum is produced all over the world. The number of distilleries producing rum is estimated at around 1,000, with a range of over 6,000 different bottlings.

Due to the wealth and tradition of this chief, the name El Dorado became synonymous with "the best money can buy". El Dorado Rum, which has been honoured with many awards, has adopted the "Spirit of Legends" theme with the same idea as the legendary chieftain: to offer the connoisseur the best quality money can buy.

Awarded the world's best rum for the third time in a row, it impresses with its balanced character. It smells of ripe fruit, bananas and nuts, as well as bergamot and jute sack. Its beautifully integrated wood tones and aromas of cocoa, chocolate and vanilla, combined with a peppery, spicy note are convincing on the palate, rounded off with a long, soft and warm finish.
