Around 2,000 years ago, sugar cane made its way from China to India, and from there, over the next 1,000 years, was brought by traders via North Africa to the Canary Islands. In the early 16th century, Spanish and Portuguese conquerors began cultivating sugarcane in Brazil and the Caribbean. It is no longer possible to determine exactly when and where rum was first produced. The only certainty is that the first governor of Puerto Rico, Ponce de León, established a distillery in 1508, immediately upon his arrival. The word ‘rum’ is said to have appeared for the first time in a decree issued by the governor of Jamaica on 3 July 1661. It is said to derive from the word ‘Rumbellium’, a common expression in the colloquial language of Devonshire (Great Britain), meaning restlessness or commotion – a reference to the intoxicating effect of this drink. However, England and France banned the export of rum from the colonies to protect their domestic products. They sold the rum at rock-bottom prices to the navy stationed in the colonies. As a result, rum from the Caribbean (West Indies) very quickly gained popularity, and in 1687 the Royal Navy enacted a law entitling every sailor to a pint (approx. 0.5L) of rum as a daily ration. And so began the long-standing tradition linking Caribbean rum and seafaring. Thanks to this tradition, rum reached all five continents and established itself as the world’s most widely produced spirit. Today, rum is produced all over the world. The number of distilleries in operation is estimated at around 1,000, with a selection of over 6,000 different bottlings.
